Rocks And Weathering Flashcards
Erosion
Erosion is the removal of rock particles by wind, water, ice or gravity
Uniformitarianism
This principle states that the same processes that operated today were the same processes operated in the past
Mechanical weathering
The type of weathering in which a rock is physically broken down into smaller and smaller pieces is called mechanical weathering
Chemical weathering
The process that breaks down rock through chemical changes is called chemical weathering
Oxidation
Oxygen weathers rock through a process called abrasion
Permeable
A rock that is full of interconnected air spaces is said to be permeable
Ice wedging
- Water seeps into cracks in the rock
- Repeated freezing and expanding
- Ice widens cracks
- Ice melts
Abrasion
The term abrasion refers to the grinding away of rock on rock particles carried by water, ice, wind, and gravity
Weathering
Weathering is the process that breaks down rock and other substances on earths surfaces
