Rocks and Minerals Flashcards
how are rocks classified
on the basis of the place of their formation
what are the three types of rocks
metamorphic, igneous, and sedimentary
how do u say something is composed of one mineral
monomineralic
how do crystals form?
they are formed from the minerals inside of magma as it cools.
what determines crystal size?
If magma cools too quickly, then the crystalsare small, but if they cool slowly, the crystals are large in size.
what determines the differences of colors of rocks
the differences of magma
mapic magma
magma that is high is iron and magnesium. they create dense, dark colored rocks
felsic magma
magma rich is silicon and aluminum and tey create less dense, light colored rocks
intermediate magma
magma that is composed of both parts
under which process do sediments convert to rock
cementation
bioclast
dead plants and animals that settle in the ground and collect to form layers of settlement
3 ways sedimentary rocks can form
when water evaporates during chemical formation, when dead remains are left behind during bioclastic formation, and when minerals are put together during clastic formation,
during chemical formation of sedimentary rocks, what is the name of solids that are left behind?
precitates
what are metamorphic rocks
rocks that re crystallize due to heat and/or pressure
when rocks are subjected to warping and banding
foliation
