Rocks Flashcards
What 3 main groups are rocks split up into?
The 3 groups rocks are split up into are igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks and metamorphic rocks.
How is an Igneous rock formed?
An Igneous rock is formed from magma from molten inside parts of earth. When magma erupts, it cools to form volcanic land forms. An example of an igneous rock is granite.
How is a Sedimentary rock formed?
A Sedimentary rock has been subjected to tremendous heat and/or pressure, causing them to change into another type of rock. They are usually resistant to weathering and erosion and are therefore very hard wearing. An example of a sedimentary rock is sandstone.
How is a Metamorphic rock formed?
A Metamorphic rock is formed from sediments that have settled at the bottom of a lake, sea or ocean, and have been compressed over millions of years.
