What is Hydraulic Action?

A

Hydraulic Action is the force of water against a rock’s surface causing air to be trapped in the cracks. The pressure weakens the rock and gradually wears it away.

Q

What is Biological Weathering?

A

Biological Weathering is burrowing. Animals such as rabbits burrow into cracks in rocks, this makes bigger splits in the rock.Plant roots can grow in the rocks too opening the rock.

Q

What is Chemical Weathering?

A

Rainwater can be acidic because carbon dioxide from the air dissolves in it. Minerals in rocks may react with the rainwater, causing the rock to be weathered. This is Chemical Weathering.

Q

What is Mechanical/Physical Weathering?

A

Mechanical/Physical Weathering is when water gets into cracks of rocks and then freezes, it then expands and pushes the rock further a part. When the ice melts, water goes further into the crack. The process repeats. This is called freeze-thaw weathering.
