Name the 3 categories of rock
~Sedimentary

~Metamorphic
How is limestone formed?
Limestone is formed when the skeletons of fish, tiny sea creatures and shells fall to the bottom of the seabed and over millions of years of are compressed and cemented together
How is granite formed?
Granite is formed when magma cools very slowly over millions of years, forming large crystals
How is basalt formed?
Basalt is formed when lava cools very quickly and forms tiny crystals (that cannot be seen by the naked eye) because it was exposed to the air
How is marble formed?
Marble is formed when magma forces it’s way into limestone, which alters it to form marble
How is sandstone formed?
Sandstone was formed when large amounts of sand were deposited onto lakes, seas and deserts, layers of sand build up and are compressed and cemented together to form sandstone
How is quartzite formed?
Quartzite is formed when sandstone comes into direct contact with magma under the Earth’s crust
What colour is limestone?
Limestone varies in colour from white to grey
What colour is granite?
Granite is black, grey or pink
What colour is basalt?
Basalt varies from dark grey to black
What colour is marble?
Marble is usually white but can be red, green or black
What colour is quartzite?
Quartzite varies from grey to white
