ROCKS Flashcards

1
Q

Can you name and explain the earths layers?

A

1) crust- We live on the crust, a thin layer of solid rock.
2) mantle- Is mostly solid but deep down it can flow slowly. The temperature increases the more deeper you go into the mantle.
3) Core- Is in the centre of the earth and we think it is made of iron and nickel.

Q

what are tectonic plates?

A

The crust and the upper part of the mantle are cracked into a number of large pieces called tectonic plates. They move really slow, but if then move suddenly then they cause earthquakes and make volcanos.

Q

What are the three types of rocks?

A

1) igneous rocks- are formed when magma cools down. there are two types: intrusive and extrusive.

2) sedimentary rocks- formed from layers of sediment (rock fragments or dead matter) laid down in lakes or seas and get cemented together by other minerals.

3) Metamorphic rocks- are formed underground by heat and pressure.
