COMBUSTION Flashcards
What is combustion and what is needed for it?
Combustion is burning - a fuel reacts with oxygen to release energy.
The three things needed for combustion:
1)fuel
2)heat
3)oxygen
What are hydrocarbons?
1) Hydrocarbons are fuels that only contain hydrogen and carbon.
2) When it is hot enough and there is enough oxygen, hydrocarbon’s combust (burn) and release water and carbon dioxide.
what is the word equation for hydrocarbon and oxygen?
Hydrocarbon + oxygen —–> Carbon Dioxide + Water (+energy)
What is Oxidation?
1) Oxidation is when a substance reacts and combines with oxygen. This is called an oxidation reaction.
2) combustion is an oxidation reaction so is rusting
3) Iron reacts with oxygen in the air and form iron oxide (rust).
What is thermal decomposition?
1) Thermal decomposition is when a substance breaks down into at least two other substances when heated.
2) The substance isn’t reacting with anything but it is a chemical change.
What are carbonates?
1) Carbonates are substances with Co3 in them (e.g. copper carbonate and zinc carbonate).
2) They usually break down into a metal oxide and carbon dioxide. This results in colour change.
3) Copper carbonate —–> copper oxide + carbon dioxide
What is a green house gas?
A green house gas traps energy from the sun in the earths atmosphere. It stop’s a lot of energy from being lost and makes the earth warm.
What is global warming and name some of it effects?
1) Global warming is a climate change and is the increase in the earths temperature.
2)effects:
.Glaciers and ice are melting which is causing sea levels to rise and coastal areas to flood.
.Rainfall patterns are changing, making it harder for farmers to grow crops.
