Rock Cycle - Igneous Flashcards
1
Q
As rock cools further…
A
Crystals form
2
Q
Contain?
A
Valuable minerals, eg. Silver, gold, diamonds, copper
3
Q
Extrusive
A
- forms when lava cools quickly on earths surface
- lava exits volcano
- minerals do not get a chance to form, little or no crystals
- dark colors=basalt and obsidian
- light colors=rhyolite
- fine grain crystals
4
Q
Intrusive
A
- magma cools slowly over millions of years beneath the surface
- magma inside volcano cools slowly
- large interlocking crystals
- dark colors=gabbro
- large grain crystals
5
Q
Used as…? Why?
A
Building materials, hard and highly resistant to weathering. Can be extracted in large blocks, uniform in composition and texture. Appear similar in facade. Eg. Voortrekker monument and London Tower Bridge
6
Q
Forms from?
A
Molten rock cooling and solidifying, either within earths crust or on surface
