(S.8(1) TA)-d steals and immediately before or at the time in order to do so uses force on any person or outs or seeks to put any person in fear of being then and there subjected to force

- must be sufficient to be noticeable
- threat of future violence not sufficient
- (Dawson and James)-word force given it’s ordinary meaning
- (B and R v DPP)-doesn’t matter if v is actually put in fear or not
- (Clouden)-does not have to be direct force
- (Bentham)-threat does not have to be as v imagines if it is intended to cause fear-threat does not have to be real

- (Corcoran v Anderton)-robbery can be committed at the point of appropriationrven though d fails to steal anything
