What is the definition of a RTC?

A

If, owing to the presence of a mechanically propelled vehicle on a road or other public place an accident occurs, whereby:

  • Personal injury is caused to a person other than the driver of that MPV, OR
  • Damage is caused to another vehicle (other than that MPV or a trailer drawn by it) OR
  • Damage is caused to an animal not in or on that vehicle or trailer drawn by it OR
  • Damage is caused to any property on land on which the road or other public place is situated, or any adjacent land

    and if required so by any person having reasonable grounds for requiring their:
  • Name and address and of vehicle if different to driver
  • Identification mark of the vehicle

Does the driver have to inform the police?

A

The driver must report the collision at a police station or to a constable within 24 hrs.

UNLESSS, Their name & address is supplied to any person having reasonable grounds for so requiring it, AND In addition for injury RTC’s – a certificate of insurance is produced to a constable or to any other person having reasonable grounds for so requiring it.
