What was the Stamp Act?
In 1765 the British placed a tax on printed materials in the colonies.
What was the Townshend Acts?
In 1767 England placed a tax on imported goods, such as tea paper and wool
What were the Intolerable Acts?
The British punished the colonists for the Boston Tea Party. British soldiers were sent to Boston and the colonists had to feed and house them. The port of Boston was closed and Boston was put under the control of a British general.
Who were the Sons of Liberty?
A group formed by Samuels Adams to protest the Stamp taxes.
Who were the Daughters of Liberty?
A group of women colonists who boycotted British goods in response to the Townshend Acts and made their own tea and wool
What was the Boston Tea Party?
In 1773 the Sons of Liberty dumped tea from a British ship into the Boston Harbor in response to the tea tax.
Did the Stamp Act work?
No, the colonies united and protested the Stamp Act and Britain repealed it in 1766. The colonists threatened and scared the tax collectors away.

Colonists were taxed on sugar and molasses.

Why did England begin taxing the colonists?
They were in debt from the French and Indian War.
What did the colonists mean by “taxation without representation?”
The colonists didn’t think it was fair to pay taxes when they didn’t have anyone to stand up for them in England.
What was the Boston Massacre?
The colonists were angry that British troops were in Boston enforcing the Townshend Acts. The colonists began throwing ice at the British soldiers and the soldiers fired on the crowd with their guns. Five colonists were hurt and six were injured.
