Road Safety & Crash Investigation Flashcards
The Automotive safety research multiple disciplinary team consists of everyone except…? Psychologists Civil engineers Mechanical engineer Medical officer Forensic officer
Forensic officer
Road safety officers look at all of the following evidence except… Tyre marks Scrape marks Fluid patches Debris Vehicle positions Human remains
Human remains
How is a vehicle inspected?
Exterior parts Intrusion Measurements Deployment of airbags Tyre condition Interior points of contact Seatbelt wearing evidence Airbag control module
What are the steps of reviewing a motor vehicle accident?
Bring all the data together Decide what occurred Identify contributing factors Identify what might have mitigated it Identify interventions to prevent it
What are tyre marks?
It is a production of friction generated heat
What are the differences of tyre marks on dry roads vs wet roads
• Dry road – bitumen heated and smeared on the road
- Darker than the road surface
- Surface dependent
• Wet road – water heated and removed, road ‘steam cleaned’
- Lighter than the surface of the road
What are skid marks?
Parallel striations
Mostly straight
Caused by wheels slipping during breaking
- What are yaw marks
a. Diagonal curved striations
b. Made by wheels that are both sliding and rotating (Vehicle is sliding sideways)
- What is the electronic stability control (ESC)?
a. Used in cars for safety, preventing cars from losing control as often and leaves les YAW marks
- How is speed data used in research?
a. Control the study of travelling speed and risk of casualty crash
- How is the speed of vehicles involved in a casualty crash measured?
a. Calculated by reconstruction of the scene
