What do circular signs mean?
They give orders
What do blue circle signs signify?
An instruction
What do red rings/circle signs signify?
They tell you what you must NOT do
What do rectangular signs do?
They give information
Why is the stop sign octagonal?
To ensure its meaning is understood if it’s partially obscured by things like snow, as well as just to give it greater prominence.
What different lines can you see in the middle of the road?
Short broken white lines (to divide lanes)
Longer broken white lines (hazard warning lanes - only overtake if the road ahead is clear)
Double white lines with a solid white line and broken line (do NOT cross)
White diagonal stripes or chevrons (these separate lanes of traffic or protect traffic turning right)
What are the different lines you can see along the side of the road?
A white line (shows the edge of the carriageway)
Yellow lines (show waiting and stopping restrictions)
Zigzag lines (white at pedestrian crossings, yellow outside schools, all mean no stopping or parking at any time)
What are the different types of lines on or across the road?
Broken lines across the road mean ‘give way’
A solid line means ‘stop’
Give way triangles, road-hump markings, arrows, warn of a hazard
Traffic light meanings
Red (stop and wait behind the stop line)
Red and amber (stop and wait)
Green (go if the way is clear)
Amber (stop unless you’ve already crossed the stop line or you can’t stop at it)

Who has priority where there is no traffic light?
Nobody
Motorway gantry signals and what they mean
Amber (warns you of a hazard or temporary maximum speed limit)
Red lights flashing on a signal and red ‘X’ is showing (don’t drive in that lane beyond the signal)
If red lights flash on a signal in the central reservation or on the side of the road and the lane closed sign is showing, you MUST NOT go beyond the signal in any lane.
If another driver is at a junction and has the wrong indicator on and you’re emerging from a junction, what should you do?
Wait until the vehicle starts to turn before you emerge

Signalling to turn right in busy traffic
Slow in down to give way at a zebra crossing
If a police officer following you in a patrol vehicle flashes their headlights or blue lights and uses their siren/horn, what should you do?
Look for their indication, pull over to the left as soon as it’s safe to do so
