Vehicle Loading Flashcards
How can overloading affect a vehicle?
Handling (including steering and braking)
Something you should do when roof racking items…
Securely fasten any load carried on a roof rack. A heavy load will reduce the stability of your vehicle.
Seatbelt rules
All passengers must wear seatbelts if they’re fitted.
The driver is responsible for ensuring that all children (under 14) wear a suitable constraint for weight and size.
Can a passenger travel in a caravan?
Yes, unless it’s being towed.
Parts to have while towing a caravan
Stabiliser fitted to the tow bar. Will help handling.
Device that would automatically stop the trailer if it becomes detached from the towing vehicle (breakaway cable attached to the parking-brake mechanism).
If a trailer or caravan starts to swerve or snake as you’re driving along, what should you do?
Ease off the accelerator and reduce your speed gradually to regain control.
Restrictions for towed vehicles on the motorway
60mph or 96km/h seed limit
You can only use the left-hand and centre lanes only
Should my tyres always be inflated to the same pressure?
Inflate your tyres to a higher pressure:
When you’re carrying a heavy load
If you’re driving fast for a long distance, such as on a motorway
Check your vehicle handbook for correct pressure in different circumstances
How will I know the maximum weight that can be put on the tow bar?
The maximum nose weight which should be applied to your vehicle’s tow bar can normally be found in the vehicle handbook
