Before you can legally drive on the road, what must you have done?
Check that the vehicle tax has been paid on the vehicle you’re driving.
Hold a valid driving licence

Why would you be prevented from taxing your vehicle?
If your MOT certificate is invalid
You do not have the appropriate insurance documentation

When must you notify the licensing authority?
When you change your vehicle, your name or your permanent address.
If you buy a secondhand vehicle (to let them know that there is a change in ownership)
If your health is going to affect your driving
If your eyesight doesn’t meet the required standard
If you’re not going to use your vehicle on public roads, do you have to pay vehicle tax?
No, as long as you advise the DVLA in advance. This is called a Statutory Off-Road Notification (SORN) and lasts until you tax, sell or scrap your vehicle.
What does insurance cover?
Injury to another person
Damage to someone else’s property
Damage to other vehicles
When you show your insurance certificate to a police officer or hand it in to be taxed, what do you get in return until you receive it?
A temporary cover note
What are the 2 main factors that determine the cost of your insurance?
Age (usually if you’re 25+ it’s cheaper)
Completing the Pass Plus scheme (isn’t available in NI)
What would happen if my insurance policy has an excess of £100?
You’ll have to pay the first £100 of any claim for damage to your vehicle
What is the Pass Plus scheme?
It helps newly qualified drivers widen their driving experience and improve their basic skills, which also helps reduce insurance costs.
When must cars first have an MOT test?
When 3 years old (or 4 for NI)
Do caravans and trailers need an MOT?
No
How long are MOT certificates valid for?
1 year
Can you drive a car without an MOT certificate?
Yes, only on the way to an appointment at an MOT centre.
Otherwise, no you can’t. You won’t be able to renew your vehicle tax and it can invalidate your insurance if you do.
What happens if the police ask to see my documents and I don’t have them with me?
You can produce them at a police station within seven days.
