RNA Translation Flashcards
What are the 4 biomacromolecules?
Carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids and proteins
What are proteins?
Polymeres of amino acids
What are the 5 major components of translation?
Ribosomes, tRNA, aminoacyl tRNA synthase, mRNA and protein factors.
What are ribosomes?
A large ribonucleoprotein that contains RNA and proteins.
What are the 3 stop codons?
UAA, UAG and UGA
How are codons read?
one-by-one without gaps or overlaps
What are the 3 stages of translation?
Initiation, elongation and termination
What is a polypeptide chain?
A chain of amino acids
What is the difference between transcription and translation?
Transcription: DNA->mRNA, Translation: mRNA->Protein
What are synonymous codons?
Those that code for the same protein.
What is the A-site, P-site and E-site on ribosomes?
A-site: Acyl where the tRNA first binds, P-site: peptide and E-site: exit site
What is polygenic RNA?
A strand of mRNA that has multiple genes.
What do leader and trailer sequences achieve?
They make sure the frame is correctly aligned.
