Q

How is siRNA prepared?

A
  • double stranded siRNA is separated to become single stranded
  • A protein complex containing hydrolytic enzymes is attached to siRNA

Q

What is the function of siRNA?

A
  • A sequence on siRNA binds to specific mRNA sequences by forming complementary base pairs with hydrogen bonds forming in between
  • The attached protein complex degrades down the mRNA so that the mRNA can no longer be translated in protein synthesis
  • A protein is not made as the gene is not expressed

Q

What are the potential uses of siRNA in the treating of genetic diseases?

A
  • siRNA could be inserted into affected cells to prevent translation so that mutated proteins aren’t made
