RNA Interference Flashcards
1
Q
What is siRNA?
A
- a short double stranded section of RNA which does not code for proteins
- cut in sequences by restriction enzymes
2
Q
How is siRNA prepared?
A
- double stranded siRNA is separated to become single stranded
- A protein complex containing hydrolytic enzymes is attached to siRNA
3
Q
What is the function of siRNA?
A
- A sequence on siRNA binds to specific mRNA sequences by forming complementary base pairs with hydrogen bonds forming in between
- The attached protein complex degrades down the mRNA so that the mRNA can no longer be translated in protein synthesis
- A protein is not made as the gene is not expressed
4
Q
What are the potential uses of siRNA in the treating of genetic diseases?
A
- siRNA could be inserted into affected cells to prevent translation so that mutated proteins aren’t made
