RNA and Transcription Flashcards
genetic information is expressed in the form of proteins by a 2 stage process:
1) transcription
2) translation
what is the function transcription?
generates a single -stranded rna identical in sequence with one of the strands of the dna duplex
what is the function translation?
converts the rna sequence into the amino acid sequence comprising a protein
how does rna differ from dna?
rna:
ribose sugar
uracil (less stable than t, which is useful for shorter lived rna)
dna:
deoxyribose sugar
thymine
describe transcription
involves formation of complementary bp of rna using antisense dna template
carried out by rna polymerase enzymes
what is rna polymerase?
multi-unit enzymes which synthesise new rna from dna templates
what are the 3 rna polymerases in eukaryotes?
1) rna polymerase I
2) rna polymerase II
3) rna polymerase III
