Rivers - water cycle Flashcards
What is evaporation?
The sun heats up water and changes it to a gas (water vapour)
Evaporation also occurs from plants, this is called ___________
Transpiration
As water vapour rises higher in the atmosphere, it starts to cool and becomes a liquid again, this is called ___________________.
Condensation
Name the five stages of the water cycle.
Evaporation Condensation Precipitation Runoff/throughflow Transpiration
What is ground water?
When rain water is absorbed into the ground.
What is precipitation
When water in the clouds get too heavy, water falls back to the earth as precipitation.
It can fall in rain, hail, sleet or snow.
What is throughflow?
When water soaks into the ground and travels through the ground.
Some rocks are permeable, they let water seep through.
What is runoff?
When rain water runs directly into rivers, streams or oceans by the surface of the ground.
If the ground is very wet, or very hard, rain water runs over it.
What is groundwater storage?
Water soaks down and fills up the pears and cracks in the rock.
