Population Density Flashcards
What is the difference between population density and distribution?
Population density tells us how many people there are per km2. Densely populated places have high population density and sparsely populated places have low population density.
Distribution the spread of people in an area. Distribution over the world is uneven.
What are some factors effecting population density and distribution?
4
Mountain areas are moist and bumpy/uneven.
Desert areas are hot and sandy.
However, areas with good resources and industry such as Western Europe are practical.
How do you calculate population density?
Total population / area km2
/ = divide
What are some positive reasons for low population density?
3
Low competition for jobs
Less pressure on education and healthcare
Available homes
What are some negative reasons for low population density?
3
Less taxes paid
Brain drain
Underemployment
Name some physical reasons for low population density
6
Too hot or too cold Steep slopes Poor water supply Too wet or too dry Few natural resources Poor soils for farming
Name some human reasons for low population density
2
Little investment and few jobs
Poor transport and links
Positive reasons for high population density?
3
More productive economy
Diversity
More taxes paid
Some negative reasons for high population density?
3
Competition for homes
Competition for jobs
Increased demands educations/healthcare
Physical reasons for high population density?
7
Pleasant climate Flat/gently sloping land Open grassland for animals Good water supply Natural resources for industries Good soils for growing crops Good food supply
Some human reasons for high population density
2
Industry and jobs
Good railways, ports, roads etc.
What is population density?
Population density is the number of people in a given area
