River Process Flashcards
What are the FOUR processes of erosion?
Explain them.
Abrasion - sand and stones carried by the river scrape the banks and bed eroding them.
Attrition - stones and pebbles bounce off each other as they are carried along eroding them.
Solution - water is slightly acidic which means some materials are corroded by water and dissolve into it.
Hydraulic action - fast forcing water forces its way into cracks in the banks causing the cracks to expand and erode in the bank.
What are the FOUR methods of transport?
Explain them.
Suspension - small light parts of rock and soil that are carried along by the river. They make the water look cloudy or muddy.
Solution - Dissolved material that is carried along by the river, you can’t see it.
Saltation - sand grains and small rocks/stones bounce along.
Traction - large stones/rocks get rolled along.
List the methods of transport in order from least to most energy.
