What is a drainage divide?
is an elevated area that separated the direction in which water flows
What is a drainage basin?
an area where the water all goes to to drain to a river or stream
What is interior drainage?
where water runs down the mountain and it soaks in or is evaporated, but it never makes it to the ocean
How does a stream change as it goes towards its mouth?
as you go farther down stream the river collects more and more water, the sediments in the water break down more and more, and the river tends to be deep because it has to hold more water
What is baseflow?
water the runs in the stream no matter what
What is runoff?
water that comes off of areas that have been hit with urbanization and it comes off at a fast rate
What are three ways that streams transport sediment?
Suspended sediment
Bedload
Dissolved load
What is urbanization?
where people and cities have been built
What is a delta?
it is a triangle shape where a river meets a large standing body of water; formed with sediment
What is a meandering stream?
and s shaped stream
What is a braided stream?
looks like braided hair
What commonly causes floods?
rain ice melts dam breaks flood protection systems storm surge
What does the phrase “Resistant rocks stand high in relief” mean?
resisting erosion
