Rivers Flashcards
What are the stages of a river
- Youthful stage
- Mature stage
- Old stage
What is a v shaped valleys and how do they occur
A valley in v shape
Vertical erosion and the river cuts down into the river bed making it deeper
How do waterfalls occur
When rivers flow over areas of hard and soft rocks
What 4 ways transportation occurs
- Rolling
- Bouncing
- Suspension
- Solution
Sorce
– The place where a river
begins.
Course
– The route the river takes to
the sea
Tributary
A small river that joins a
larger river.
Confluence
The point where the
tributary joins the river.
Mouth
The point where the river
enters the sea.
Estuary
The part of the mouth that is
tidal
Basin
The area of land drained by a
river.
Watershed
– The high ground
separating one river basin from
another.
The River’s Jo
4 processes of River Erosion
- Hydraulic Action
- Abrasion
- Attrition
- Solution
Landforms of the mature stage
- Wide river valley
- Meanders
- Flood plain
Whats is Hydraulic Action
The force of the moving water wears away the banks and bed of the river.
What is Abrasion
- Small stones carried by the river wear away at the the banks and bed of the
What is Attrition
The small stones in the river are worn down and broken up as they hit off each other.
What is Solution
Rocks and soil are dissolved by acids in the water.
What is the youthful river
The youthful river has a small amount of water but it travels very quickly down the steep mountain slope.
Energy of a River
The amount of energy a river has depends on:
Discharge: The volume of water in the river, more water means more erosion
• Gradient: The steeper the gradient, the faster it erodes
What are Currents
Ocean currents are predictable and constant circular
movements of seawater around our plane
What is Tide
Tide refers to the rising and falling of the sea level due to
forces created by the Sun and the Mo
What is transportation
• Transportation refers to the movement
of eroded material (load) by the sea.
• The swash and backwash
What is deposition
refers to when the sea
drops or deposits its load of eroded
material along the coast by the swash
of waves.
