Rivers Flashcards
Name all river transportation processes
Traction, saltation, suspension and solution
Definition of attrition
When rocks in the water become smaller and rounder by constantly smashing into each other
What is a valley
An area with higher ground on either side. Where a river runs through
Define the Floodplain of a river
The land either side of the river which may flood if the river overflows
What is the difference between a confluence and a tributary
A tributary is a small river meeting a main one and a confluence is the point where they join
Define the mouth of a river
Where the river ends and meets the sea
What is abrasion?
When rocks are carried along by the river rub and scape along the river beds and banks
Define confluence
The meting point of 2 rivers
What is a tribuatory
It is where a smaller river meets a main one
Define hydraulic action
The force of the river against the banks can cause air to be trapped in cracks. The pressure weakens the bank and gradually wears it away
What are the four key erosion techniques?
Sollution, hydraulic action, abrasion, attrition
What are the four key erosion techniques?
Sollution, hydraulic action, abrasion, attrition
What are the key river processes
Erosion, transportation and deposition
What is traction
Traction is a method of transportation for large stones or boulders in a river. The stones are rolled along the river bottom by the water as they are too large to transport in the water.
What is saltation
Saltation is the bouncing of sand grains as they are picked up, carried along, and dropped repeatedly by flowing water.
