River Wye Flashcards
Geomorphic process that have shaped the river + climate
725mm average rainfall
Plynlinouth hills 2500mm
Rapid river flows and high erosion causing mass movement
Low temperatures at source resulting in v shaped valleys
Influence of geology in the formation of the river
Upper course - impermeable shale ->doesn’t absorb water -> higher volume of water -> higher flow rate -> faster -> erosion - cleddon falls
Rhayader - rapids
South of Hereford - sweeping meanders - mudstones
Lower course - levees and floodplains are formed due to material deposit in the middle course
Impact of management
Lakes - storage lakes have been constructed above the town as a surplus of water (letton lakes)
Flood wall - walls that are placed to protect the city from flooding. 200 homes at 5 million
Flood plains - parts of town that are deliberately left to flood
Tree planting - helped stabilise slopes reduce mass movement, will also affect natural formation of levees
Reduce flood height by 20%
How human activity influenced the geomorphic process in the landscape
- in the 1700s the river was used for tourism, rock climbing, canoeing, kayaking
- trees were used up but replanted since ww2
- used for agriculture due to the irrigation from river
- limestone quarrying results in change in gradient
