North Norfolk Flashcards
Depositional landforms
Spit - Blakeney point caused by longshore drift
Salt Marsh - Stiffkey caused by reduced wave energy behind the spit
Sand dunes - Holkham caused by shallow sea off the coast which at low tide uncovers sand which is blown onshore
Human coastal management
Stiffkey - salt marsh acts as a natural defence against the sea
Sheringham - sea walls and riprap barriers to protect settlement
Wells next the sea - groynes and gabions to slow longshore drift
Holkham - pine trees planted to stabilise the dunes, tourist boardwalks
Geology
Entire region underlain by sedimentary chalk
Exposed to the west in places like Overstrand
On top is a layer of glacial deposits which are weak and prone to mass movement
In one region cliffs are retreating by over 1 metre a year
Climate
Present day climate is dry with warm summers and cold winters
Till can crack in dry conditions causing mass movement
Freeze thaw weathering if there are cold winters
