River Processes Flashcards
What are the 3 river processes
Erosion, transport, deposition
What are the different erosion types
Hydraulic action, abrasion, corrosion
What are the different transport ways
Traction, saltation, suspension, solution, flotation
What is meant by the term deposition
When the river load is dropped and remains stationary on the river bed or bank
Definition of hydraulic action
The force of water
Definition of Abrasion
Material picked up and rubbed against the river bank or bed (sand paper effect)
Definition of Altrition
When one rock hits another and they get smaller
Definition of corrosion
Water dissolved the rock
Definition of traction
Moves heavy stuff in the bed of the river
Definition of saltation
Bounces off the bed of the river (medium heavy)
Definition of suspention
Hanging in the water (light)
Definition of solution
When it’s dissolved in the water
Definition of flotation
Being transported from the surface of the river
When does deposition occur. Why?
When there is not enough energy to transport the load. This can occur because -the slope is too gentle
-too many obstacles
-fall in velocity
-large dense deposited first
Definition of discharge in a river
Amount of water flowing in a river
