A

produced in upper course because the river cuts down more quickly than the surrounding slopes are eroded.

Q

River cliff

A

the river moves faster on the outside of the bend and cuts into the valley side. The erosion undercuts the ground causing it to collapse, leaving a cliff.

Q

River beach

A

(Slip-off slope): the river moves more slowly on the inside of the bend. It cannot carry the larger pebbles and these are dropped here.

Q

Ox-bow lake

A

Q

Levée

A

during floods the overflowing river is slowed as it leaves its bed. Silt is deposited along the banks first. Over the years the deposits build up into high ridges

16
Q

Chemical Action (Corrosion)

A

Water dissolves minerals from the rocks and washes them away.

17
Q

Traction

A

Quite large stones can be rolled or dragged along the river bed by the force of the water.

18
Q

Saltation

A

Small stones which the water cannot lift bounce off each other and are carried forward by the water above the river bed for short distances.

19
Q

Suspension

A

If particles are small enough the river can lift them and carry them long distances.

20
Q

Solution

A

When the river dissolves minerals from the rocks they are carried in the water itself.
