River landforms/ features Flashcards
How are V shaped valleys made
Are produces as the river erodes it’s bed
The river erodes vertically i.e downward, producing steep valley sides
What’s a meander
A large sweeping bend in the river
How is a meander produced
Water is pushed into the outer bend
Water is moving very slowly on the inside bends and deposition occurs here
Overtime the meanders change shape and size
What’s an oxbow lake
When the river floods it breaks through the this meander neck and the river takes the easier route (strains route)
Overtime a oxbow lake will be taken over by vegetation.
What’s a floodplain
The area of land which the river flows over is very flat. During times of flood, a river will overflow its banks and cover the surrounding land
