River flooding causes!✨ Flashcards
What is a river flood?
After heavy rain or rapid snow melt, there may be to much water for the river the hold, so it will overflow its banks and spread out across the land on both sides of the the channel. this is called a river flood.
Explain rock and soil type
Rock and soil types-Impermeable rocks and soil do not allow water to soak through them, and any rain that falls will stay near the surface
Explain very wet soil
Very wet soil-If rain is falling for a long time, the soil may become full of water. Now rain is unable to soak into the ground and remains on the surface.
Explain very dry soil
Very dry soil-Soil that is baked by the sun in dry weather builds up a crust. Rain is unable to soak through the hard crust and remains on the surface.
Explain steep slopes.
Rain falling on a steep slope runs quickly downhill towards a river, causing it to flood.
Explain how deforestation causes flood
Leaves stop water from reaching the ground, and water on leaves evaporates and does not reach the ground. Roots take up water and reduce the amount reaching the river, and they slow down the movement of water in the soil.
