- Previous suicide attempt
- Suicidal ideation but doesn’t necessarily mean child is in danger but is a concern. If there is intent an a plan it means they have resolve
Can go on for years - Mental disorders
Higher ESI on the BASC, the higher the concern because it is global psychopathology) - Co-occurring alcohol and substance abuse disorder
- Feelings of hopelessness and helplessness
If they succumb to hopelessness and helplessness, it’s global - Sexual minority status (transgender, gay, etc and isolation)
Not uncommon that if they can’t manage this process, this occurs - Sense of isolation and poor problem solving
- Consider cultural and religious beliefs (if they glorify suicide)

Family and Environmental Risk Factors
A
- Easy access to lethal weapons or to medications
- Family history or exposure to suicide
- Influence of significant people who have died by suicide; could be celebrities too, someone kid looks up to
- Local epidemics of suicide sometimes leads to copycat behavior
- Barriers to getting mental health treatment
i. e example with parent hearing child saying they want to kill themselves; “i hear how difficult it is to hear this/how hard it must be for you” – challenged defense

- Recognize cultural diversity especially when it comes to personality assessment
TEMAS - instead of the TAT of people with one ethnicity; constantine - Sensitive to cultural beliefs in personality assessment
- Recognize own cultural bias and limitations in understanding different cultural perspectives
- Consider the level of acculturation
Where is this kid in the process of acculturation (which is coming in contact with different cultural groups and changes that occurs in that person) - Interventions have to be culturally appropriate
- Skills in non-biased assessment
- Conduct assessment in client’s language
- Increase cultural competence by consulting with others
- Become familiar with strengths and weaknesses of assessment tools

Problems in Using Normed-Tests with CLD Students
A
- Test norms are limited to small samples of bilingual and CLD
- Norming procedures leave out kids limited proficiency
- Possible bias in item content
Must use clinical and empirical methods (includes not just the BASC but also sentence completion, drawings, interview)
