risk assessment of perio disease Flashcards
What is a risk marker
this implies the presence of the disease but is not the cause of the disease
eg bop indicated active gum disease but is not the cause of the disease
What is a risk factor
this is a factor which increases the probability that a disease may develop in an individual
What are local risk factors
‘local’ to the oral cavity
factors which may influence plaque accumulation
what is a systemic risk factor
the host response
what can local risk factors be broken down into 3
- anatomical risk factors
- latrogenic
-trauma
what sort of anatomical risk factors can we get(4)
- furcation involvement - diff to access and clean/plaque stagnation area
- root morphology - root grooves - dont respond to RSD
- localised gingival recession - toothbrush trauma, habits, piercings
- dental anatomy/tooth relationships - crowded dentition, retroclined teeth , morphology of teeth
what sort of latrogenic risk factors can we get 5
- overhanging rests
- poorly designed partial dentures
- ortho appliances
- defective crown margins
- defective bridge pontics
What sort of trauma risk factors can we get
usually traumatic occlusal force and occlusal trauma
what are the different systemic risk factors
- genetics
- age
- immuncompramised (med conditions)
- smoking (behavioural)
