Oral epithelium Flashcards
what are the 2 basic tissues that make up the oral mucosa
epithelium - superficially
connective tissue - underlying
what are the 3 functions of the oral mucosa
MAINLY PROTECTION:
- mechanical
- bacterial
- chemical
- prevent dehydration
SENSATION - richly innervated
SECRETION
What is the junction called between the free /attached gingiva and the alveolar mucosa?
MUCOGINGIVAL JUNCTION - darker pink up on alveolar mucosa, and lighter pink on attached/free gingiva
What 3 types of mucosa do we have in the oral cavity
- masticatory mucosa
- lining mucosa
- specialised mucosa
What will happen when placing LA into lining mucosa
this is a FLEXIBLE mucosa type, therefore, will be pain free if done properly
what will happen if we place LA into masticatory mucosa
as it is tightly bound down, it can hurt
