Risk Assessment Flashcards
What is the definition of a risk?
probability that an individual will get a specific disease in a given period.
how is risk assessment defined?
Act of determining the likelihood of a disease occuring in the future based on the balance between risk factors and protective factors.
what is the definition of periodontal disease?
factors associated with developing the disease or influencing the progression of disease that already exists?
What are the different types of risk assessments?
Dentistry: Caries
Oral cancer
Periodontal disease
Other: Diabetes
Heart disease
hypertension
Obesity
Cancer
Insurability
What is the purpose of risk assessment?
- develop or modify treatment plan
- use patients own risk factors to educate patient
- educate about individual oral health problems
- provide factual information
- relate oral health findings to behavorial habits
- educate about behavioral modification methods.
What are some sources and selection of risks?
mh dh social history clinincal examination and radiographs, patients perception/ health beliefs
What are risk factors?
exposures behaviors lifestyles genes and or condiitons that if present will increase the likelihood of a disease occuring.
What are the description of risk factors?
- Influence ones susceptibilty to disease
- number and type modify onset, degree and severity of the disease
- exposure to risk factor must occur prior to disease onset
- directly related to disease occurrence
What are two categories of risk factors?
modifiable (environemental and behavioral) and nonmodifiable ( intrinsic to individual and referred to as risk determinants).
How are risk factors identified?
- longitudinal and interventional study associations.
- interventional studies able to give evidence of the benefits of eliminating risk factor.
What are some risk indicators and markers?
indicators: exposures, behaviors, lifestyes, genes and or conditions that are associated with increased risk for the dosease but evidence does not support conclusively the association, probable risk factors.
Markers: predicators for disease occurrence
Identification: based on observations in cross sectional and case controlled studies.
