What are the 3 realms of ethics?
individual, organizational/institutional, societal
What is the individual realm concerned with?
the good of the patient/client and focuses on rights, duties, relationships, and behaviours between individuals (least complex problems)
What is the organizational/institutional realm concerned with?
the good of the organization and focuses on structures and systems that will facilitate organizational or institutional goals
What is the societal realm concerned with?
the common good (the most complex realm)
What are the 4 individual processes?
moral sensitivity, judgement, motivation, courage
What is moral sensitivity?
involves recognizing, interpreting, and framing ethical situations
What is moral judgement?
deciding in right versus wrong actions; process involves generating options, selecting, and applying ethical principles
What is moral motivation
places a priority on ethical values over other values like self-interest, status, or financial gain
What is moral courage?
implementing the chosen ethical action, including the development of a plan and perseverance in the face of barriers and adversity
What are the 5 ethical situations?
issue/problem, dilemma, distress, temptation, silence
What is an ethical issue/problem?
important values are present or may be challenged
What is an ethical dilemma?
two alternative courses of action may be taken and it is not possible to fulfill both obligations (right versus right)
What is an ethical temptation?
involves a choice between a right and a wrong where you may stand to benefit from doing the wrong thing (right versus wrong)
What is an ethical distress?
you know the right of action but are not authorized or empowered to perform it
What is an ethical silence?
ethical values are challenged, but no one is speaking about this challenge to values
What is the legal test?
Is something illegal? If so, it is probably not a true ethical dilemma, but a temptation
What is the stench test?
Does it feel wrong? - like a gut reaction
What is the front page test?
How would you like this in the front page of your local news paper?
What is the mom test?
If I were my mother, would I do this?
What are the 3 approaches to solving an ethical dilemma?
rule based, ends based, care based
What is the rule based approach?
follow the rules, duties, obligations, or ethical principles already in place
What is the ends approach?
determine the consequences/outcomes of alternative actions and the good/harm that will result for all stakeholders
What is the care based approach?
resolve dilemmas according to relationships and concern for others
What is step 1 of the RIPS model?
recognize and define the ethical issue
