What are Favelas?
-Are squatter settlements that grow in and on the edge of cities.
-There are 1000 in Rio, the largest being Rocinha with population of 70,000 in 2010.
What are ways in which the favela have been improved?
-Forced evictions, but this left thousands homeless, increasing crime rates.
-Rich made to contribute more taxes to develop rural towns and improved quality of life for people.
What are the effects of the 2016 Olympics on favelas?
-Created many jobs for construction for locals where they also learnt new skills for long-term employment.
-Favelas have been developed to encourage visitors to the area.
-1000 families lost homes for new link roads and facilities. Tried to rehouse with Campo Grande but failed, since no recreational activities there.
What is the Favela Bairro project?
-A site and service scheme (local authority provides land and service for homes to be built).
-Has improved drainage systems and access to clean water.
-Activities such as Capoeira and samba to stop young people getting involved in gangs.
Has the favela Bairro project been successful?
-Improved roads easier mobility of residents for work.
-Access to education, healthcare and clean water and sanitations has improved QoL.
-Employment has risen so more money to spend in local business more more children in schools, so reduces crime rate.
-Recognised by UN for other Brazilian cities to follow suit.
-People do not have skills to repair houses and better housing= higher rent much the poor can’t afford.
