-West Africa, lies north of the equator, south coast of Gulf of Guinea.
What is the regional and global importance of Nigeria?
-Regional Importance: 2014 it had highest GDP in Africa & 3rd largest manufacturing sector, despite lack of infrastructure and regular power cuts has large potential to lead way a development in Africa.
-Global Importance: Nigeria is NEE in 2014 became world’s 21th largest economy, 12th largest producer of oil.
What is Nigeria’s industrial structure?
Primary jobs- mostly farming, Secondary- processed foods, Tertiary- communications, media, retail, finance.
What are the benefits of manufacturing?
Regular paid work gives secure income- increased taxes, manufactured goods available for people to buy, Attracts Foreign Companies (TNCs).
What are the advantages and disadvantages of TNCs?
Advantages: Offer millions of jobs to people which gives taxes help government improve healthcare, infrastructure.
Disadvantages: Cause problems to the environment (Bodo Oil spill). Work conditions are usually poor decreasing quality of life. Economic Leakage.
Impacts of aid in Nigeria?
eg. Charitable Aid, Multilateral Aid.
Advantages: -Uk has funded health and HIV programmes and education.
-World Bank funded loans to business to diversify economy from dependence to oil.
Disadvantages: -Aid is not as useful with corrupt governments who may use things in the wrong ways.
-Donors may have political influence over who does and does not benefit.
What are impacts of economic development?
-Social- Breathing/ lung problems, harmful pollutants running into drains (risk), Services not kept in pace with growing cities, Waste disposal- collection services are poor so dumped into street.
-Environmental: Soil erosion, Pollution of water supplies, Oil spills damaging fresh water.
