Rights and Responsibilities Flashcards

Q

what is a relationship

A
  • Any connection or involvement you have with another person is called a relationship. Good relationships are important for good health and wellbeing.
  • Relationships satisfy many needs including physical needs (e.g. food) social needs (e.g. friendship and love) and emotional needs (e.g. respect).
  • Each relationship you have is different. Some relationships will be close and very important to you (your parents); others will be more distant and casual (the bus driver) and won’t play a vital role in your happiness and wellbeing.

Q

why are peers important

A
  • A peer is generally someone whom is an equal in age or ability- someone you know well or not at all. A friend is a peer whom you develop a closer relationship and is usually someone you trust and respect. As you move through adolescence, the relationships you form with your peers become increasingly important. During this time, relationships with parents and other family members can change as you become more independent.

Q

why do different relationships need different behaviours

A
  • Different relationships have different expectations in terms of appropriate behaviour. What might be the norm in your peer group may not be what is expected in other relationships. For example, sometimes swearing can go unnoticed in friendship circles but that is not acceptable in a family or school context.
  • Respect is an important part of positive relationships. Being respectful involves behaving appropriately when with other people in various situations.
