What are positive rights?
clearly given to a citizen usually in the form of a constitutional protection
What are negative rights?
Not explicitly set and only exists because of an absence of any law banning them
When and what was the Magna Carta?
1215 - Imposed various restrictions on the monarchy in order to prevent the arbitrary use of power by the monarch
When and what was the Bill of Rights?
1689 - Imposed greater limits on the power of the monarchy and set out the rights of parliament
When was the European Convention on Human Rights?
1953
When and what was the European Court of Justice?
1973 - it meant that the European Court of Justice had the power to protect workers’ rights in the UK
When and what was the Humans Rights Act?
1998 - INCORPORATED THE ECHR INTO UK LAW. Replaced a lot of common law and allowed citizens to access rights protection through the UK legal system
When and what was the Freedom of Information Act?
2000 - Ensure political transparency by allowing citizens to access non - security related information held by public institutions
When and what was the Equality Act?
2010 - Consolidated a number of other Acts into one. It consolidated all measures relating to equality
What was the purpose behind passing the Freedom of Information Act (2000)?
Governments were too secretive and this took away the barrier between gov and the public
