Right Realist Theory Of Crime Flashcards
Rational Choice Theory
Most criminals are rational actors, the criminal calculates the risk of getting caught is low, or that punishment if caught will not be severe then they are more likely to commit crime.
Routine activities theory
Cohen and Felson - in most circumstances social control mechanisms lack of opportunity prevents crime from taking place
Most crime was opportunistic and if individuals motivated to commit crimes encountered easy opportunities to commit them then its more likely to occur.
Broken windows theory - wilson and kelling
In neighbourhoods where there is a lack of concern for others- grafffiti and vandalism , leaving broken windows unrepaired and tolerating aggressive behaviour - this sends out a signal that no one cares
There is an absence of both formal social control and informal social control
