Rifle Plt in the Offense Flashcards
What is a hasty attack?
Attack when the commander decides to trade preparation time for speed to exploit an opportunity.
What is a deliberate attack?
Type of offensive action characterized by pre-planned and coordinated employment of firepower and maneuver to close with and destroy the enemy.
What are the offensive forms of maneuver at the platoon level?
Frontal attack
Flanking attack
What is a warning order?
The warning order allows subordinate leaders to begin their own planning while the commander writes the full order.
What items should be considered by the commander from COC?
S-2, S-3, S-4, S-6
What is a leader’s recon?
Small, leadership-heavy reconnaissance patrol that will operate in close proximity to the enemy.
How should priorities of recon be worked?
From enemy to friendly
What should be considered when deciding on a SBF position?
Located on enemy frontage
Offset from maneuver element
Cover and concealment
How can a SBF position be occupied?
By force or stealth
Give some examples of TCMs for the offense:
Boundary Assembly Area Attack Position Line of Departure Checkpoint Phase Line Release point Target Reference Point Assault Position Objective Limit of Advance Linkup Point
What is a TRP?
Target Reference Point - An easily recognizable point on the ground (either natural or man-made) used to initiate, distribute, and control fires.
How can the estimate of the situation be updated?
Higher’s order, COC coordination, and the leader’s recon.
What are the 3 categories of fire support in the offense?
Preparatory fires
Fires in support of the conduct
Fires in support of the consolidation
What are tasks used for?
Providing subordinate units their mission.
What additional signals are needed for SBF?
Commence
Shift
Cease
Displace
What does it mean for the SBF to commence fire?
Begin suppressive fire. If the SBF position is occupied, this is when the SBF will seize the position.
What formations can be used to move to the objective?
Column, wedge, echelon, vee, line
When can a maneuver element move.
When covered by terrain or effective fires
How can effective fires be achieved?
Ensuring rounds are on target before exposing.
Ensuring proper distribution of fires.
Ensuring targets are prioritized.
What are the capabilities and limitations of the sustained rate?
Provides average suppression and conserves ammunition and won’t overheat.
What are the capabilities and limitations of the rapid rate?
Provides more suppression, but uses double the ammunition and causes the gun to overheat.
What is the calculation to determine how much ammo is needed?
A > S * M
A = Ammunition
S = Weapons firing * average rate of fire
M = Distance to objective/average rate of movement
If the maneuver element is moving slower than planned, what options does the commander have?
Reduce the overall rate of fire
Reduce or cease fires on lower priority targets
Increase the rate of movement
What is the Plt Cmdr responsible for on the objective?
Control fire support
Control maneuver element
Coordinate with higher and adjacent
