Rickettsia & Chlamydia Flashcards
Fever and rash always in
Rickettsia
What are the main points to know about rickettsia?
- mostly arthopodborne
- Gram - , don’t stain well
Obligate intracellular parasites - Tetracycline/Doxycycline
-OX-10
-OX-9 in weil-felix reaction
Rocky mountain spotted fever
caused by Rickettsia Ricketts or R Ricketsii transmitted by ticks from dogs or mice.
- can kill, if don’t take parasite out in 10 days*
Epidemic Typhus
caused by rickettsia prowazekii
- BODY LOUSE
- head/body lice
- need good hygiene
- may also cause brill- Zinsser disease
Endemic Typhus
R. Typhi
- S.W Mexican typhus tarbadillo
- Rat flee , contaminate clothes/airborne
Scrub Typhus
R. Tsutsugamushi transmitted by mice
- French L’etache noir same like Eschar (black spot at site of bite)
Trench fever
Bartonella Quintana
- head/body louse ( can survive in human blood and lice feces)
- SHARK SHIN fever
- no Weil-felix reaction
Rickettsial pox
- R. Akari
- mouse bites L’Etache noir
- resembles chicken pox
- No weil felix reaction
Tickborne fever*
R. Conori
- L’etache noir
- ticks brown dog
- milder version of RMSF fever & rash
R prowazekii for epidemic typhus also brings out
Brill-Zinsser disease
- can remain latent
Ehrlichiosis
bacteria that attacks WBC and inhibits phagocytosis
Human Monocytic ehrlichiosis (lone star tick)
Human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (dog/deer tick).. affect neutrophils
Q fever is known as
Coxiella Burnetti
Carroll Burnett likes milk
- most heat resistant pathogen known to man. temp of pasteurization is based on this bacterium.
- in livestock transmitted droplets cattle, sheep, goat
-donut shaped granuloma
Chlamydia
obligate intracellular parasite
- subgroup of rickettsia
- TRIC agent Trachoma inclusion conjunctivitis
- Gonorrhea like disease cause by sexual contact
- stains poorly and cannot grow on living tissue of labs
- BACTERIAL INFECTIOUS DISEASE
- ANTIBIOTICS
chlamydia trachomatis
More common in males
- fever, malaise, swelling, tenderness
- male symp- urethritis, epididymitis, urethral discharge, hemospermia, proctitis (rectum)
- female symp cervicitis, endometritis, salpingitis, proctitis, PID
NGU means
non gonococcal urethritis
- gram - diplococuss
burny discharge like gonorrhea
