Define apathy
Lacking motivation to do something
Define charity
Giving to the needy, or an organisation that that does not work for profit and which usually works to help others
What is compassion?
A feeling of pity or sympathy that can lead to caring, usually for those less fortunate
Define debt.
A situation where a person, organisation or country owes more money than they possess
What is an excessive salary?
Also known as ‘fat cat’ salaries; large amounts of money earned, plus possibly bonuses and share options
What is housing benefit?
A system where the poor receive help to pay some or all of their rent
Define inheritance
When a friend or family member leaves a person money or property in their will when they die
What is minimum wage?
The legal lowest amount that must be paid to a worker. Currently £6.70 forr adults in the UK.
What is the national lottery/ Lotto?
A weekly gambling competition available to over-16s which offers large cash prizes for the few winners. Costs £2 to enter 1 ticket.
What proportion of Lotto money goes to charity?
28%
Half to health and education, the other half split equally between heritage, arts and sports.
Define poverty
Being without money, food or other basic life necessities.
What is the difference between absolute poverty and relative poverty?
Absolute poverty (usually seen in developing countries) is when a person doesn't have the basic things they need for survival. Relative poverty (seen in the UK) is when a person is poor in comparison to others in society.
What is the poverty trap?
When a person can not escape being poor, often due to debt, wasteful spending habits, location or unemployment.
What is voluntary service?
A person who chooses to work with the poor without being paid
Define wealth
Large amounts of money or investments
