Rice plant adaptation Flashcards
1
Q
aerobic respiration features
A
- Plants grows taller than the water level, upward where leaves should be above water level and has access to air so that co2 and o2 exchange can happen by stomata
- has arenchyma(loosely packed cells) in stems and roots so gas that enter through the stomata can be able to diffuse to to other parts of plant whether it is below or above water, o2 and co2 can therefore be held in tissue even in underwater and can be transferred by parts that has access to air
- This is supplemented by air that is trapped between the ridges of underwater leaves. These leaves have a hydrophobic corrugated surface that had a thin layer of air in contact with leaf surface.

Q
anaerobic respiration
A
- for roots submerged under water and cannot receive oxygen, can use alcohol fermentation. ethanol is toxic but rice plant have higher level of reisilient in toxicity compared to other plants
- has higher amount of alcohol dehydrogenase which breaks down ethanal
- this means plant can still can grow even when o2 is scarce suing atp from anaerobic respiration
