A

Heat-retaining granitic and schist define most of the North. Cote-Rotie, Condrieu and Hermitage carved out of this bedrock. Near Condrieu thin topsoil rich with powdery, decomposed mica, known locally as arzelle. Souls are heavier with clay down south ( St Joseph and St Peray)
