What is rhinitis?
Inflammation of the nasal mucosa
What are the different types of Rhinitis?
Allergic rhinitis
Seasonal - such a hay fever
Perennial - goes throughout the year
Episodic - comes out of the blue
Describe the disease pathways of allergic rhinitis?
Inhalation of antigen Detected by immune system Mast cells activated Release of mediators, Histamines cyst, prostaglandins - causes itching sneezing Delayed immune response from eosinophils
What is the treatment for rhinitis and rhinorrhea
Glucocorticoids - anti-inflam
H1 receptors antagonists - mediate receptor block
CysLT1 receptor antagonist - receptor block
Vasoconstrictors - nasal blood flow
Sodium chromoglicate - anti-allergic
How do vasoconstrictors work in rhinitis and what is their purpose?
To reduce nasal blood flow
e.g. Oxymetazoline
Selective alpha 1 adrenoreceptor agonist
What symptom goes hand in hand with rhinitis?
Rhinorrhea
