Rhinitis Flashcards
What is rhinitis?
Inflammation of the nasal mucosa
This condition leads to mucosal swelling and increased viscosity of nasal secretions.
What are the effects of rhinitis on nasal secretions?
Increased volume and viscosity of nasal secretions (mucus)
This is a direct result of inflammation in the nasal mucosa.
What are common causes of head fever?
Allergy, immune compromise, emotional stress, medications, diet
These factors can lead to viral, bacterial, or fungal infections.
What triggers allergic rhinitis?
Pollen, spores, dust mites
Allergic rhinitis is often a response to environmental allergens.
What role does IgE (antibodies) play in allergic rhinitis?
Stimulates mast cells to release histamine
Histamine release contributes to inflammation and symptoms of rhinitis.
What is non-allergic rhinitis associated with?
Chemical irritants, environmental changes, lifestyle factors
This includes pollution, diet, drugs like NSAIDs, (non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs) and stress.
What is the etymology of the term ‘rhinitis’?
rhin- = nose, -itis = inflammation
The term describes inflammation occurring in the nasal area.
What are the two types of rhinitis?
Acute and chronic
The classification depends on the duration and severity of the symptoms.
