Anacoluthon
Lack of grammatical sequence; change in grammatical structure within the same sentence
Ex:
Alliteration
Repetition of initial sound beginning several words in sequence
Ex: Ricky’s rocking rocket
Anadiplosis
Rhetorical repetition of one or several words specifically repetition of a word that ends ones clause at the beginning of the next
Ex: women are workers. Workers for the law, workers for the household, workers for religion.
Anaphora
Repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of successive phrases or clauses or lines
Anastrophe
Transposition of normal word order
Ex: glistens the dew upon the morning grass
Antistrophe
Repetition of a phrase or clause at the end of successive phrases clauses or lines
Antithesis
Opposition or contrast of ideas or words in a parallel or balanced construction
Ex: I loved the house , but I loved John more
Aporia
Expression of doubt in which a character seems up uncertain in what he should think say or do
Ex: should I open the door? Said the butler
Aposiopesis
Form of an eclipse in which a speaker comes to an abrupt halt seemingly overcome by emotion
Ex:
Apostrophe
A sudden turn from the general audience to a person, group or personified advocate present or absent
Ex: oh god helpmeet to figure this problem out
Archaism
Use of an older or obsolete form
Ex: thy
Assonance
Repetition of same sound in words close to eachother
Ex: the fire whines in the light
Asyndeton
Lack of conjunctions between coordinate phrase clauses or words
Ex: I will open the door without looking, seeing, hearing
