synecdoche
the presentation of something as being smaller, worse, or less important than it actually is. (you can’t be that hungry)
understatement
a play on words
pun
usage of words, phrases, or images in a way not intended by its normal signification (stop and smell the flowers)
trope
a statement that has two meanings, one of which is dirty or vulgar (she’s hot)
double entendre
a reference to another work of literature, person, or event
allusion
a short and amusing or interesting story about a real incident or person
anecdote
old-fashioned or outdated choice of words
archaic diction
a very typical example of a certain person or thing
archetype
an adjective or descriptive phrase expressing a quality characteristic of the person or thing mentioned (she was a copycat/she was bright)
epithet
an indirect, less offensive way of saying something that is considered unpleasant (i didn’t get fire, i got laid off)
euphemism
special words or expressions that are used by a particular profession or group and are difficult for others to understand (dont forget the marcato)
jargon
a form of understatement that involves making an affirmative point by denying its opposite (double negatives: there isn’t anything i won’t do for more sleep)
litotes
a figure of speech in which something is referred to by using the name of something that is associated with it (la was winning by 10 (more broad, vague)
