sentence structure
syntax
when the subject of a sentence carries out the action. ex: the pen’s ink gild smoothly across the paper.
when the subject of a sentence obtains the action. used to highlight the action and uses word “by”. ex: the paper was written on by me.
active vs passive voice
omission of conjunctions between coordinate phrases, clauses, or words
asyndeton
the repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of successive clauses
anaphora
A statement consisting of two parallel parts in which the second part is structurally reversed
chiasmus
in a sentence, the omission of a word or words replaced by three periods
ellipsis
the repetition of a word at the end of successive clauses or sentences
epistrophe
similarity of structure in a pair or series of related words, phrases, or clauses
parallelism
Linking items together by a shared word and omission of that word.ex: she ran away from the dog and her feelings.
zeugma
the direct opposite, a sharp contrast ex: dating is easy, marriage is a commitment
antithesis
a universal truth; an established rule
axiom
the arrangement of events by time
chronology
a point yielded to an opposing perspective during an argument. ex: though disney+ is cheaper, netflix has a bigger variety.
concession
the introductory part of an argument where the speaker establishes credibility, subject, and purpose
exordium
Placement of two things closely together to emphasize comparisons or contrasts
juxtaposition
any sort of art, media, or literature that promotes a political viewpoint, especially through deception or cheap appeals to emotion
propoganda
A form of deductive reasoning consisting of a major premise, a minor premise, and a conclusion.
syllogism
patterns or structures in a passage and the purpose they serve
